Dance the night away with SCA

Press release issued: 12 February 2004

Over 100 Bristol senior citizens will be putting on their dancing shoes for Bristol University's Student Community Action (SCA) Annual Dinner Dance next Wednesday, February 18.

Over 100 Bristol senior citizens will be putting on their dancing shoes for Bristol University's Student Community Action (SCA) Annual Dinner Dance next Wednesday, February 18.

The evening starts with a sherry reception before dinner.  Guests will then have the opportunity to watch the Bristol Union Capoeira Society and the Bristol Ballroom Dancing Society display team before taking to the floor themselves.

All the guests are from the local community - Redland, Clifton and day centres all over the city.  The guests have paid £6 per ticket, with SCA covering additional expenses.  Students will act as door-to-door escorts, providing transport for those people who can't get to the Union themselves.

Bryony Ryan, SCA Co-ordinator, said: 'The Dinner Dance is one of the most popular events in the SCA calendar.  The evening is open to anyone and for many guests it's the highlight of their year.  A few years ago one couple got married after meeting at the event.

'We're not expecting to play cupid again, but we're looking forward to welcoming everyone back again.  It's great for the elderly to interact with some young people and for our students to have the opportunity to chat to some of Bristol's more experienced residents.'

The SCA Dinner Dance will take place from 6 pm in the Avon Gorge Suite, 5th floor, Students' Union, Queen's Road.

The Bristol Union Capoeira Society is a popular Brazilian martial art combining elements of music, dance, acrobatics, philosophy and culture.

The Day Centre takes place in the Students' Union from 11.30 am until 3 pm every Wednesday during term-time.  If anyone is interested or knows someone who would benefit from the Wednesday social club, get in touch with the SCA office on 0117 954 5888.
