Bristol RAG benefits charities

Students at Bristol University have raised over £56,000 for national and local charities so far this year through their RAG (Raising And Giving) campaigns.

The University of Bristol Union RAG raises funds in many ways. All money from RAG events, such as RAG Week, Jailbreak and Barmy, go to local charities, while money raised from weekly raids and street collections every Saturday across the country go to national charities.

Last month RAG donated £11,499, the largest amount ever, to Bristol charities and projects. Organisations which were awarded funds are:

During Easter, a group of 11 "raggies" did a RAG Tour in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign. This involved travelling to Bath, Cheltenham, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield by minibus and doing a street collection in each city every day. Spurred on by their day off at Alton Towers, they raised £9,486 over the week. Five of the RAG team hit four-figure personal fundraising totals.

Alex Durbidge, RAG Officer, said: "RAG is a charity fundraising organisation run entirely by students.

"The greatest thing about RAG is that every penny raised by the volunteers makes a difference to charities both locally and nationally."
