IT and the law - what's the score?

A pioneering centre dedicated to tackling the new legal challenges associated with the fast-moving world of information technology will open at the University of Bristol this summer [June 1, 2002].

This is a cross-disciplinary venture building on existing strengths in the Faculties of Law and Engineering and Computer Sciences. The new Centre will be supported by an Advisory Group of international businesses and legal experts.

Vodafone Group Services Ltd, Barclaycard, Herbert Smith, Hewlett Packard Laboratories and the Law Society Charitable Trust are all investing in the new Centre to find solutions to legal problems created by new technology. Each member of the Advisory Group has invested £15,000 a year for five years.

The Centre will be directed by the University's newly appointed Senior Research Fellow, Andrew Charlesworth, who was previously Director of the Information Law & Technology Unit at the University of Hull.

Mr Charlesworth said: 'By bringing together experts in the field of law, computer science and engineering we can quickly tackle legal issues that arise in the ever-changing world of information technology. I am very excited by the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.'

On behalf of the University, Professor David Clarke, Dean of the Faculty of Law, commented: 'This is a novel and challenging opportunity for our Law, Engineering and Computer Science specialists. We look forward to working together and utilising all our strengths.'
