University celebrates Eritrean Independence Day

Bristol University's Graduate School of Education will welcome to the city today [Friday June 1] Eritrea's Ambassador in London, His Excellency Ato Ghermay Ghebremariam, to celebrate an important date in the Eritrean calendar, Independence Day.

The Graduate School of Education has a long history of working with developing countries on education provision and education policy.

The Graduate School has a strong link with Eritrea, one of the poorest countries in the world, and currently has 30 Eritrean students in the department.

The University's link with Eritrea goes back to the mid-'80s. Since then, the Graduate School has trained some 200 educational administrators and principals in Eritrea and more than 40 Eritrean postgraduates here in Bristol.

Roger Deeks, Deputy Head of the Graduate School of Education, said: 'I look forward to welcoming His Excellency Ato Ghermay Ghebremariam to the Graduate School. The Bristol-Eritrea link is very important as it enables us to share in mutually beneficial teaching and research activities.'
