Calling All Musicians 2011-2012

There are many opportunities at the University to perform in all kinds of musical ensembles - newcomers are always welcome. This page tells you everything that you need to know. Admission to many groups is entirely open - ask for details at the Music Society stall at The Freshers Fair 2011. Entry to other ensembles, however, is by audition during introductory week (aka week 0, Monday 3 October - Friday 7 October 2011, although some auditions are on the Saturday and Sunday [8 & 9 October] as well): see below for details. This is your only chance to audition for the present academic year - places will be allocated in this first week.

Audition lists are in the Victoria Rooms foyer - do sign up early for a time.

Symphonia’s repertoire ranges from Vaughan Williams to John Williams, and from Beethoven to the Beatles and we play at least 2 concerts a year. Places in the orchestra are limited so selection is done by application form, although we reserve the right to audition if numbers of applications are high. NOTES

  • One single audition covers Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and New Music Ensemble; likewise, the University Singers and Chamber Choir. All players and singers (including members of last year’s ensembles) need to audition - nobody has an automatic right to a place in any ensemble.
  • Please note that these are classical music auditions – if you are more interested in popular repertoire, then groups such as the University Big Bands, TUBBS and Music Theatre Bristol will be suitable for you.
  • TIMETABLES will be posted in the Victoria Rooms at the beginning of Introductory Week so you can sign up for an audition - if you turn up without having booked a time, you will not be able to audition. At your audition, you will be asked to perform a short piece of your own choosing and to take a sight-reading test. The piece should be chosen with a view to showing off both technical proficiency and tone quality.
  • CONCERT & REHEARSAL SCHEDULES for the whole year will be available at the audition so you can see what membership of the various ensembles involves. If you are offered and accept a place in any ensemble, it is expected that you will attend all rehearsals and concerts for the whole year.
  • Please note that Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra rehearse at the same time so it is not possible to be a member of both.
  • CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA LISTS WILL BE POSTED AFTER MIDDAY ON MONDAY 10 OCTOBER IN THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT FOYER.
  • All rehearsals take place at the Victoria Rooms unless otherwise stated
