Jean Hasse is the Tutor for the MA course in Composition for Film and Television. She composes for films, silent films, theatre, websites and special events, as well as concert music pieces (chamber, brass, choral, etc). She is also active as a music copyist, publisher and pianist. Jean holds degrees from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Ohio (BM), and the University of Bristol (MA).

Recent composing projects include:

  • New scores for a University of Bristol theatre production (soundscape), website podcast (choral and piano music), animation films (DVD/book combinations) and other films (2010-11).
  • Autism: Coming of Age (2010, 55 min.): Scoring for this documentary, broadcast on 200 PBS television stations (US).
  • The Fall of the House of Usher (1928, James Watson, Dir., 12 min.): A new score for Counterpoise (violin, trumpet, alto sax and piano) to accompany the silent film. Premiered at Kings Place, London, March 2010, and then toured.
  • Pocket Pieces (2009, publ. Visible Music): 61 pieces for piano in three books.
  • The Rat (1925, Graham Cutts, Dir., 80 min.): Live accompaniment for piano, accordion and clarinet, premiered in November 2008 at the Arnolfini, Bristol.
  • Spot the Penguin: Royal Society Summer Exhibition, London, 2008. Soundscape to accompany the University of Bristol Department of Physics' exhibit.
  • Ghosts Before Breakfast (1927, Hans Richter, Dir., 7 min.): A new score for violin, trumpet, alto sax and piano to accompany the silent film, premiered April 2008. Live performances across the UK.
  • Mabel's Dramatic Career (1913, Mack Sennett, Dir., 14 min.): Live piano accompaniment to the silent film, March 2008, NFT/BFI Southbank, London, Birds Eye View Festival.
  • Faust (1926, F.W. Murnau, Dir., 106 min.): A new score for chamber orchestra to accompany the silent film. First performances were October 2007, Victoria Rooms, Bristol, and the Barbican, London.
  • Brunel.Bristol: A four-minute musical soundscape (music software samples and sound effects) that preceded the University Vice-Chancellor's talk on Bristol, Brunel and Science, December 2006, Wills Building. http://www.bristol.ac.uk/alumni/news/2006/42.html
  • Collections Considered: Solo violin piece for Peter Sheppard Skaerved, performed at the British Museum, June 2006 and October 2010, and St Paul’s Cathedral, August 2007.
