During a long career of flute playing, Douglas Townshend has been principal flute piccolo player with Sadlers Wells Opera, principal flute with both the Halle Orchestra and the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra ( now the BBC National Orchestra of Wales ) and has freelanced widely. He has broadcast concertos by Bach, Mozart, Carl Nielsen and Ibert amongst others and performed an extensive repertoire of chamber music. His playing has taken him to major cities in Europe, Scandinavia, North America and the Far East.
Alongside his career as a performer, Douglas Townshend has taught in music colleges in London, Manchester and Cardiff and has been a visiting tutor at the University of Bristol for over 20 years. He has also coached the flute section of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and is a past Chairman of the British Flute Society.
