Angela Hickey

Angela studied violin and singing at the Guildhall School of Music and joined Glyndebourne Festival Opera on graduation. She has appeared as a principal soloist with English National Opera, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne, Monte Carlo Opera, Dublin Grand Opera, Opera Northern Ireland, Opera Factory, City of Birmingham Opera and New Sussex Opera, Genoa Teatro Carlo Felice and Opéra Rouen and Caen.

As well as a long and varied career in opera, Angela has sung regularly on the concert platform at home and abroad as soloist in Brazil, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. She has made numerous recordings and television appearances.

Anglela has been teaching for more than fifteen years, passing on the knowledge gained not only from her own teachers and the conductors, directors and composers with whom she has worked, but also from her own performing experience. She is regularly involved in auditioning, adjudicating and master classes and she is an active member of the British Voice Association and the Association of Teachers of Singing.

The vocal technique Angela teaches is based on Italian vowel sounds, correct breathing and posture and abdominal support for the voice. She places great emphasis on correct pronunciation and use of the Italian, French, German and English text in opera, lieder and songs, as well as music theatre.

From high tenors to low basses and coloratura sopranos to contraltos, Angela teaches all types of voices and singers, from those who want to become professionals to those who enjoy singing for pleasure.

Angela offers specialist help with entry to post-graduate courses at Music Colleges and Conservatoires. With her own studio in Clifton and an extensive library of opera and oratorio scores, songs and music theatre, she gives special coaching in preparation for auditions and has facilities for recording and production of audition CDs. In addition, career development guidance is available for those wishing to become professional singers.
