Jennifer Bate (1944-2020)
2 April 2020
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of the distinguished concert organist Jennifer Bate.
Jennifer Bate was one of the finest organists of her generation, noted particularly for her interpretations of the works of Olivier Messiaen, with whom she worked closely from 1975 until the composer's death in 1992. In 1986 she performed the UK premiere in Westminster Cathedral of the composer's final, and longest, organ work, the Livre du Saint Sacrement.
Jennifer Bate graduated from Bristol in 1966 with a BA in Music. She regularly returned to the university to give guest lectures, masterclasses and performances and, in 2007, the University awarded her an Honorary DMus. She was appointed OBE in 2008 and Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 2011.
Jennifer is survived by her partner, Andrew Roberts, to whom we offer our sincere condolences.
