Bristol Music's Research Excellence confirmed in REF 2014 results

23 December 2014

Bristol Department of Music's research is rated at 100% international calibre.

The Department of Music's reputation as a dynamic, world-class place to undertake research has received official confirmation in the 2014 assessment of research quality nationwide (REF 2014).

  • Our submission presented the research of all our eligible staff, and we were one of only seven Music Departments in the UK whose work was judged to be of 100 per cent international calibre.
  • 74 per cent of our research activity was considered to be 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'.
  • As compared with the last national exercise of 2008 we more than tripled our score for work meriting the very highest grade of 'world-leading' (35 per cent of the submission in 2014).

The REF exercise has been established by the government to judge the originality, academic significance and rigour of research outputs, the quality of the intellectual environment in which research is nurtured, and the wider social and economic benefit (impact) of research activity. The results of REF 2014 confirm our Department's excellence, creativity and international competitiveness in all aspects of our work.
