In the late 1880s, after a period of virtual creative silence, Mahler embarked on two ambitious symphonies that grew out of the central European tradition and also significantly rethought the genre. This lecture will explore some of the innovative aspects of these works, and especially the interaction of narrative and architectural elements in the Second Symphony.
