As recently as the 1950s the name of Mahler was barely known in this country. Today he is regarded as one of the mightiest of symphonists; his works have been recorded many times, and can be guaranteed to fill a concert hall. What brought about the change, and why does his music appeal so strongly to listeners of all ages, 100 years after it was written? Christopher Redwood aims to explore this question and also to introduce Mahler's music to those not familiar with it.
