For 25 years the composer Anthony Payne pondered and absorbed the 130 pages of sketches which Elgar left of his 3rd Symphony. Payne finally made a full-length realisation of the work, first performed to great acclaim in 1998, and Elgar's own description of the work as: "the strongest thing I've put on paper" had been thrillingly demonstrated at last. Payne's profound identification with the skeches, the detective work, decisions, and the skill and courage needed to invent an ending of the final movement - all of this is a fascinating story.
