Although commonly supposed to have originated with Mozart, the clarinet actually dates back as far as the late 17th century with the chalumeau. This dayschool will trace the development of the instrument from its origins to the late 19th century, drawing on repertoire by Zelenka, Molter, Stamitz, Mozart, Weber and Brahms among others. Jane Booth, clarinetist with the OAE, and John Irving, pianist and Mozart specialist, will combine live performances with discussions of the relevant historical background and performance practice issues.
