Programme structure

B.A. Single Honours in Music is a three-year programme

B.A. Joint Honours in Music and a Modern Language is a four-year programme (including a year abroad)

Nomenclature at Bristol:

  • Year 1 = Level C
  • Year 2 = Level I
  • Year 3 (or year 4 for Joint Honours) = Level H

120 credit points are required in each of the three years of study in Bristol. For a B.A. Single Honours student, the pattern of study is as follows:

  • Year 1 (Level C): Six 20-credit units (three in each semester), totalling 120 credits. Five of these are mandatory.
  • Year 2 (Level I): Two mandatory units (one in each semester) and four optional units (typically two in each semester), totalling 120 credits
  • Year 3 (Level H): 120 credits made up from a selection of optional units combining extended studies (40 credits pursued across the whole year) and 20 credits taken within semesters.

For a B.A. Joint Honours student, the first year of study requires 60 credits to be taken in Music and 60 in the Language subject; the precise pattern of choices in years 2 and 4 will depend on the weighting of subjects (Major Music, Minor Music or Equal).

Overview of the programme

First year (level C)

B.A. Single Honours students normally take all six units. However, 20 credits of approved units at Level C may be taken in another Department instead of the ‘Practical Studies’ unit, subject to timetabling constraints. Alternatively, ‘Instrumentation and Conducting’ can be taken for 10 credits with 10 credits in another Department.

B.A. Joint Honours students take either Historical Studies I or II (or both) and any other units to the total value of 60 credits in Music for the year.

Single-semester units:

Semester 1:

  • Historical Studies I
  • Technical Studies I: Harmony and Harmonic Analysis

Semester 2:

  • Historical Studies II
  • Technical Studies II: Introduction to Baroque Composition

Year-long units (taught across both semesters):

  • Compositional Studies (Acoustic Composition and Studio Composition)
  • Practical Studies (Instrumentation & Conducting and Performance)

Second year (level I)

BA Single Honours: Six units (each of 20 credits) are taken, including both Core Units and at least one option from List A in each semester and at least one option overall from List C (and no more than one in either semester). Weighting is normally three units in each semester.

Up to 20 credits may be taken outside the Music Department at this stage. Students are only permitted to take 40 credits worth of open units in total outside the Music Department during the course of their degree.

BA Joint Honours: Two, three or four units (each of 20 credits) are taken, depending on the weighting with the modern language, including at least one of the Core Units.

Core units (mandatory for BA Single Honours):

  • Issues in 19th century music
  • Issues in 20th century music

List A options (for second year students only):

Typically SIX of these will be offered each year, but not necessarily all.

  • Further Written Techniques (Classical/early Romantic)
  • Transcription and Editing
  • Analysis
  • Compositional Strategy
  • Studio Composition Live
  • Performance

List C: ‘split-level’ history options (all 20 credits):

[taught to years 2 and 3 together]

The historical options typically focus on the research strengths of members of staff and provide a broad spread of historical periods and types of study (subject to patterns of staff research leave). Topics vary from year to year. Normally three or four will be offered in each semester.

Third year (level H)

B.A. Single Honours students take one or two Extended Studies and at least one list C option. The remaining options, making up 120 credits for the year as a whole, may be freely chosen from lists B or C. Weighting is normally three units in each semester.

A List C option taken in Year 2 may not be taken again in Year 3.

Up to 20 credits may be taken outside the Music Department at this stage. Students are only permitted to take 40 credits worth of open units in total outside the Music Department during the course of their degree.

B.A. Joint Honours takeunits to the value of 40, 60 or 80 credits, depending on the weighting with the modern language, possibly, but not necessarily, including an Extended Study.

Restrictions:

  • Composition extended study may not be combined with List B Composition Project.
  • Studio extended study may not be combined with List B Studio Project.
  • Performance extended study may not be combined with List B Performance.

Exceptionally, Musicology extended study may be combined with List B Musicology Project, provided that the two topics are substantially different in content and approach.
