The Alexander Technique is well known in many fields, particularly in the music world, for helping individuals in all aspects of life. Its benefits are far reaching since the Technique helps with physical performance and emotional functioning (for example RSI, stage fright, freedom of expression and your approach to practice). "To me, the AT is about bringing the mind and the body to work in complete collaboration in order to help free your expressive capacities." - Jean-Paul, composer
Bristol is lucky enough to have an Alexander Technique teacher training school, and one-on-one lessons are available with third year trainees. They are held at the University on Tuesdays in two sessions between 11.45 am and 1.00 pm.
Lessons are offered primarily to first year music students and the lessons are for the duration of the academic year but numbers are limited. There is a small charge of £10 for the year.
For further information about these classes contact Caroline Chalk – Head of Training (email: caroline@battsa.co.uk; telephone: 01761 439904).
“I would definitely recommend these AT classes. As a musician, having good balance and posture is absolutely vital to being able to play for sustained periods of time - but this is something often neglected. Learning [AT] has been hugely beneficial to my playing, as well as to everyday life.” - Charlie
Half-hour individual or group lessons with qualified teachers are available to everyone in the music department. An individual lesson costs £22; Groups of five pay £5 each.

"I can play for longer now - before I could play for maybe one hour and my back would hurt." - Guilherme, violinist
