Research and collaboration

Research:

The Centre for Medical Education has established a two-year research partnership with the Graduate School of Education to develop research capacity investigating how technology can best enhance learning and teaching to inform our own practice.  Known as TelME (Technology enhanced learning in Medical Education), the initial focus of this research has been to build an evidence-base to inform the role technology plays in learning and teaching in year 3, and to inform how technology should be embedded within the curriculum.

Other research activities include investigating the use of e-learning to elicit student attitudes within palliative care and use of decision-making tutorials within International Health.

Collaboration and partnerships:

Regional collaborations are underway with Cardiff Medical School and The Peninsula Medical School. Initial ideas for collaboration include virtual patients and co-development of learning resources.

We are a key partner in the Organising Open Educational Resources (OOER) Project led by the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine; investigating sharing educational resources across institutions. Bristol is responsible for developing a toolkit for patient consent. The project has 20 partners from UK schools of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.  This project is funded by JISC as part of their "Open education resources" programme.

CHERRI2 (Clinical Health Education Recordings Reusability Initiative) is investigating the feasibility of a nation-wide model for patient consent and copyright developed under CHERRI  and making recommendations.  As part of this, we ran a 2 day workshop in November 2009 bringing together key national players, including the GMC standards and ethics committee, to discuss issues relating to re-use of clinical health-care recordings. This is significant if institutions wish to share existing learning materials and make them openly available.
