History taking, Mental State Examination and Classification

The ability to communicate with patients is a fundamental clinical skill which lies at the heart of psychiatric practice.  It helps with the diagnosis and formulation and shapes the therapeutic alliance which is an essential aspect of medical practice.  Try to talk to as many patients as you can as you will learn and hone your skills with each assessment that you do.  You will have the support of your educational supervisor, members of the teams you work with, your unit tutor, and your colleagues. The more you do, the more comfortable and rewarding it becomes.
