Areas of expertise The focus of my research is the understanding of hydrological and geomorphic processes within watersheds, particularly the generation and transport of water and sediment from hillslopes to rivers and the implications for off-site contamination and nutrient movement. The evolution of this research has led to three broad strands of work: (1) Hillslope hydrology and sediment transport; (2) Dryland hydrology and geomorphology; (3) Fate and transport of dissolved and sediment-bound constituents. My work is both theoretical and applied and involves field, experimental, analytical and modelling components. I have been developing numerical models of rainfall-runoff and sediment transport, and in 2004 I procured funding for, and set up, a large-scale state-of-the-art experimental erosion facility – TRACE (see http://www.bris.ac.uk/geography/research/hydrology/facilities/trace/) – which I use to develop novel sediment and chemical tracing techniques and to test hypotheses on the interaction between runoff, sediment, nutrient and chemical transport processes under controlled conditions.
