My research interests are; abusive relationships, particularly in the domestic arena; the utilisation of practical and emotional personal support systems; refuge work and workers; supported housing; bereavement and loss; trauma and recovery mechanisms; counselling, counselling skills and advocacy.
I have just completed a longitudinal study of the support needs of women who leave an abusive relationship and spend time in a refuge before moving out into a new community. The research built on my existing research into the support needs of women during their stay in the refuge and has entailed talking to my original interviewees to learn about their subsequent experiences. Research of this nature has not been carried out for over 25 years and the results, currently being written up for publication, will be of interest to all those working in the field of domestic violence.
