Undergraduate Courses

Mechanical Engineering is a broad-ranging and intellectually demanding discipline involving advanced technology and professional skills. The Department offers four-year MEng (Master of Engineering) courses that are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers that fully prepare students for a career as a professional engineer. The range of programmes allows the possibility for a third year studying at a foreign university. In addition we offer a three-year BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) course in Mechanical Engineering. In the first year of study it is usually easy to transfer from one programme to another; therefore, applicants should apply for only one course. If you are unsure about which programme you would like to follow, then you are advised to apply in the first instance for the MEng in Mechanical Engineering (H300). If you require advice or further information then please contact the undergraduate admissions tutor.

Students undertaking project work
The BEng consists of the first three years of undergraduate units, whilst the MEng includes a fourth year of Masters level units. For the MEng course the Group Industrial Project, Innovation Entrepreneurship and Enterprise, and Professional Studies (H301/H311 students only) are mandatory. H300 students must choose 7 out of the remaining optional courses. H311 students must choose 6 optional courses and H301 students must take Computer-Based Modelling (if not taken in Year 2) and choose 5 optional courses.

MSc in Mechanical Engineering 1-year (Taught) Programme:

The MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering degree course which covers a broad range of engineering topics. As part of their course MSc students attend year four undergraduate courses and undertake their own project work.

New from 2011 is an MSc in Advanced Engineering Robotics.

PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Research):

The Department has a large and active community of PhD students and post-doctoral research assistants undertaking research. We welcome applications for PhD study and research assistant positions throughout the year. Please note that the Department does not offer internships. As at most British universities, it is not necessary for those wishing to study for a PhD to complete or register for an MSc in the first instance. For information on how to apply, please see the admissions page.
