Abstract:

Rearrangement inequalities are a simple but powerful tool in Analysis.  In this talk we will discuss the Riesz rearrangement inequality and a generalization due to Brascamp, Lieb, and Luttinger.  Cases of equality for Riesz's inequality were characterized by A. Burchard.  In general, while some cases of equality are known, a full characterization remains open.  In a special case, we show uniqueness of known cases of equality.  The work discussed is joint work with M. Christ.
