Inter-library lending services for other libraries

This page contains information for libraries wishing to request items, including copies of articles, from the University of Bristol Library.

Individuals should contact the library of their home institution or local public library to ask about obtaining items on inter-library loans (ILL) and document supply.

The University of Bristol Library is a member of the following schemes:

• South West Regional Library System (SWRLS)
• Circle of Officers of National and Regional Library Systems (CONARLS)
• International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Voucher Scheme for international lending

We welcome requests from libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland. We charge those libraries which are not members of SWRLS or CONARLS the same prices as those charged by BLDSC for standard loans and copies.

We have no blanket restrictions on material which can be lent, but cannot lend items which are listed in the Library Catalogue as having a 7 day or shorter loan period. We can consider lending these items during the summer vacation before September. We will consider lending material which is in our Special Collections and volumes of serials depending on their value and condition. However, any Special Collections material will be lent for use in the borrowing library only and we will require insurance while in transit. We do not lend DVDs or videotapes.

We welcome requests from libraries outside the UK and Ireland and will accept payment for these by credit card or by IFLA Vouchers. All material lent to these libraries is for consultation in the requesting library only.

University of Bristol theses

Ph.D theses are available from the EThOS, the British Library electronic thesis service.  Lower level theses listed in the Library Catalogue may be lent to other libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Please note that the Library does not routinely collect Masters theses and only includes a selection in its collection.

How to contact us

Material held in our ten branch libraries is lent to other libraries via our Inter-lending and Document Supply office. We try to respond to requests as quickly as possible but there may be delays while items are fetched from our branch libraries. We inform other libraries, using the mailing list lis-ill@jiscmail.ac.uk, of any particular reasons for delays, such as our Christmas closure period.
