Journal title abbreviations

Literature references are often written with abbreviated terms. Probably the most troublesome are abbreviated journal titles which can make finding a journal difficult.

To find the full journal title when only an abbreviation is given, try looking at the following online resources:

• Search All that JAS: Journal Abbreviation Sources - a registry of online resources that either list or provide searchable access to journal abbreviations and their full titles. Alternatively try the general 'Acronyms and Abbreviations' search box  provided on the home page.
• Search an Abbreviations and Acronyms Dictionary
• Periodical Title Abbreviations - a list of useful web and print sources for finding journal abbreviations courtesy of Humboldt State University Library.
• Look on Journal Citation Reports (science and social science) database.
• If you are unable to find the abbreviation you are looking for, please ask a member of the Library staff for assistance.

Unofficial abbreviations

Sometimes very short unofficial abbreviations are employed in reference books or journals.

Please note: these should not be used in the references that you write, unless they are stipulated by the body or journal that you are submitting your work to.
