Learning resources

  • Internet for Music - A free 'teach yourself' tutorial on Internet information skills for Music from Intute. This will help you to find and learn how to use information in Music. Other subjects available also.
  • Internet Detective - a more general guide on using and evaluating Internet resources, and including some advice on plagiarism.  On plagarism see also general Information Services, and departmental, advice.
  • Library Catalogue - for print resources and Metalib - for electronic resources : short videos for learning how to make use of these resources effectively.

Research tools for

  • American Sheet Music - this is a collection of historic 19th and early 20th century sheet music held by Duke University in the United States.  Digital images from over 3000 pieces are available online for education and research purposes.
  • Victorian Popular Music - part of the British Library's Collect Britain series
  • Concert Programmes - a database providing descriptions of concert programme collections held by leading libraries, archives and museums in the UK and Ireland
  • Bach Bibliography - an article from Ariadne, 2001 gives background information on the database, and some searching tips
  • British Library - archival sound recordings gives access to downloads for UK higher education
  • Gregorian Chant  - a collection of databases and datafiles made available by Universitat Regensburg for Cantus Planus, a Study Group for the scholarly investigation of the chant traditions of Eastern and Western Christendom.
  • Manuscripts of the Abbey Library of St. Gallen, Switzerland - a virtual library of medieval codices
  • Schenkerian Analysis - Tom Pankhurst's Guide is a companion website to his book on the topic published by Routledge in 2008, and available in the Arts and Social Sciences Library.
  • Hymn Tune Index - this is the website for Nicholas Temperley's Hymn Tune Index.  It includes links to sheet music, MIDI and MP3 files, articles, notes on coding and other resources.
  • International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP) - this site aims to create a virtual library of public domain scores. There have been copyright problems, so it is not comprehensive, but can be useful as a quick-reference tool, or for printing out just one page/section of a score.  Browsing via Composer can be more effective than searching.
  • Choral Public Domain Library (CPDL) - this site provides free access to choral music scores, texts, translations, and information about composers.  Again browsing via Composer can be more effective than searching.

Newsletters

  • Shubert Archive - is an archive of 20th century theatrical documents collected by the Shubert brothers, and made available by the Shubert Organization which owns and operates sixteen Broadway theatres in New York City.  Recent issues of the newsletter, The Passing Show, are available in full text from this link. 

Other useful links

  • Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology - an international database of bibliographic records for completed dissertations and new dissertation topics in the fields of musicology, music theory, and ethnomusicology, as well as in related musical, scientific, and humanistic disciplines
  • Index to theses - an index to theses, with abstracts, accepted for higher degrees by the universities of Great Britain and Ireland. The coverage goes back to 1716. Further information and search help are available on the database.
  • Cecilia: Music Collections in the UK and Ireland - this is an ongoing project to provide an online guide to music collections in libraries, museums and archives of the UK and Ireland. The database is searchable by Time, People, Place, Subject, Tradition or Institution.
