Book collections

  • The majority of Classics and Ancient History books can be found on the second floor of the Arts and Social Sciences Library, at the classmark ranges shown in the table below.
  • Note that several subjects relating to Classics and Ancient History have been brought together under the PA prefix for the sake of convenience. Books about modern history and social sciences, religion and the visual arts post antiquity are located at different areas of the Arts and Social Sciences Library.

Among these are volumes from collections such as the Loeb Classical Library and the Oxford Classical Texts series, which are frequently used by commentators. The table below outlines the shelfmark ranges at which these texts can be found. All such texts are arranged on the shelves alphabetically by author.

  • Note that some of our holdings published before 1978 have not yet been added to the online catalogue. If you cannot find a pre - 1978 publication on the online catalogue, please use our Card Catalogue Online, which has replaced our paper-based card catalogue.
  • Owing to their size, some books in the Classics and Ancient History collections are prefixed "Oversize", "Folio" or "Pamphlet". These are kept in separate locations on the relevant floor.
  • A small number of books and journal articles are kept in the Short Loan Collection on the ground floor of the Arts and Social Sciences Library. Books in this collection have an item status of "SLC", while the location for journal articles in the collection is "Issue desk". Please note that fines for overdue items from the SLC are very heavy.
