For information about the process of applying for admission to a postgraduate degree in the School of Law:
International applications 1 June.
UK/EU applications 1 July.
All applications 1 August.
Research students can apply at any time although applications should preferably be received at least two months before preferred start date (either January, April or October each year). Applicants for a School of Law Research Student Award must apply before 7 July.
Candidates are not normally interviewed.
Potential research students are normally interviewed either in Bristol or (in the case of international and European applicants only) over the telephone, or by Skype.
Applications cannot be considered unless accompanied by two references and a degree transcript (or partial transcript): you need to allow sufficient time to gather the documentation before sending in your form. If these documents are not in the English language they should be accompanied by a certified English translation. Applicants for the M.Phil. or PhD programmes must also submit a full research proposal: see Guidelines for Completing a Synopsis (Word, 26kb). It must be emphasised that the research proposal is crucial in assessing whether the application can be supervised by a member of staff and whether it will be a feasible project. Advice cannot be given on these questions until a research proposal has been submitted.
We aim to acknowledge all taught applications within two weeks of application, except at peak times, and to let you have a decision as soon as possible. However, decisions on applications to the research programmes will take longer to make than decisions on applications to the taught programmes. All offers will be conditional on provision of suitable financial guarantees for the fees applicable to the programme in question. Some offers may also be conditional upon outstanding degree results and/or language requirements.
The Postgraduate Office is happy to advise students on qualifications, offer conditions or scholarships.
Applicants are welcome to defer their applications for one year. Requests should be made in writing to the Postgraduate Office. All postgraduate applications are stored for a maximum of one year after which they are confidentially destroyed, as required by the Data Protection Act.
