Hon Lord Toulson, UBLC Patron and Supreme Court Justice, delivering first ever Patron's Lecture on 'Murder and Joint Enterprise'.

Press release issued: 11 March 2016

On the evening of 10th March, The Right Hon Lord Toulson, UBLC Patron and Supreme Court Justice, delivered the first ever Patron's Lecture on 'Murder and Joint Enterprise'

Following an introduction from Michael Ford QC, Lord Toulson outlined the history surrounding how the definition for murder has been shaped. He then discussed the case law surrounding joint enterprise before focussing on the recent case of R v Jogee which Lord Toulson jointly gave the lead judgement on.

The event saw the Wills Memorial Building Great Hall filled to capacity with 600 students in attendance - and finished with thirty minutes of questions from the audience with a variety of students engaging with Lord Toulson further over policy considerations, implications following the decision and how the Supreme Court analysed the case law differently to in previous cases.

Sam Unsworth, President of the UBLC commented;

It was a privilege for the UBLC and Law School to have Lord Toulson deliver such a compelling lecture on an incredibly topical area of law. It is hoped that the UBLC Patron's lecture will become an annual event in the calendar and follow the brilliant success of this year's event.

Special thanks are owed to Sam, Dan Schaffer, Chair of the Law School Advisory Board, Michael Ford QC, Professor of Law, and the UBLC team, for all their hard work in putting together this event, along with the support of the Law School.
