National Criminal Advocacy Competition 2015

Student Advocacy Competition

1 May 2015

Amy Evans and Emma Woods took part in the second round of the National Criminal Advocacy Competition, held at the University of Sussex.

On the 25th April 2015, Amy Evans and Emma Woods took part in the second round of the National Criminal Advocacy Competition, held at the University of Sussex.  They represented the University of Bristol in this intervarsity advocacy event.

The competition started with Amy and Emma making bad character and hearsay applications. They also acted as defence counsel in a criminal mock trial for a defendant charged with s.18 and s.20 Offences Against the Person [Act 1861]. They had the opportunity for examination in chief of the defendant and cross examination of the victim.

The University of Bristol team will discover, in a few weeks, if they have made it through to the competition ‘finals weekend’.

Amy and Emma said “The criminal advocacy experience has proved really useful and we have both obtained great feedback from a practising judge (who judged the pre-trial applications and the criminal trial) as well as practice in how to keep a barristers robe on (harder than it looks!).”
