The School of Law invites a number of high profile speakers from academia, practice, and European and international institutions. In addition to giving a lecture or taking a seminar, they talk to students and staff, thereby providing an excellent opportunity for discussion.

Professor Nikiforos Diamadouros, The European Ombudsman.

P. Nikiforos Diamandouros is, as of 1 April 2003, the European Ombudsman. From 1998 to 2003, he was the first National Ombudsman of Greece. He has also been Professor of comparative politics at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Athens since 1993 (currently on leave). From 1995 to 1998 he served as Director and Chairman of the Greek National Centre for Social Research (EKKE).

Mrs Sarah Lee - 25 January 2011

Mrs Sarah Lee gave a lecture on "Practising EU Law at the Bar" on Tuesday 25 January 2011.  Following her lecture, Mrs Lee gave a Q&A session.

Sarah Lee is a senior junior  at Brick Court Chambers practising in the fields of EU Law, Public Law and Competition/Regulatory Law.  Her practice includes both advocacy and advisory work and she is experienced in conducting cases and appearing in a variety of courts and tribunals including the High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Competition Appeal Tribunal, the Competition Commission, the Court of First Instances and the European Court of Justice. She has been on the Government's Treasury A Panel since 2007 and was a B Panel member prior to that. Her clients include public and private companies and government bodies.  She has been involved in proceedings before the Court of First Instance relating to Article 81 EC and in number of EU cases before the European Court of Justice.

Lord Justice Jacob - 20 January 2011.

Lord Justice Jacob gave a lecture on the relationship between English courts and European Law  on Thursday 20 January 2011. Following his lecture, he gave a Q&A session.

Lord Justice Jacob (Sir Robin Jacob) is a judge in the Court of Appeal of England and Wales.  He practiced at the Intellectual Property Bar from 1967. From 1976 to 1981 he was the Junior Counsel for the Comptroller of Patents and for Government departments in intellectual property. He was made a Queen's Counsel in 1981. His practice has often taken him abroad (Hong Kong, Singapore, Europe, USA, Australia). He was appointed to the Bench in 1993. From 1997 to 2001 he was Supervising Chancery Judge for Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff. He was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in October 2003. He was Treasurer of Gray’s Inn in 2007.

Mr David Rennie - 30 April 2010

Mr David Rennie, EU correspondent of  The Economist, gave a Public Lecture on the international role of the European Union entitled 'If Obama's America is struggling to make soft power work, what chance does Europe have?' on Friday 30 April, 2010.

David Rennie is EU correspondent for The Economist.  He joined the Economist in 2007 as European Union correspondent, based in Brussels. Previously he was on the foreign staff of the Daily Telegraph, with postings in Sydney (1998), Beijing (1998 to 2002), Washington DC (2002 to 2005) and Brussels (2005 to 2007). Before that, he worked for the Daily Telegraph in London (1996 to 1998), and the Evening Standard.

Mr Christopher Kuner 22 February 2010

Christopher Kuner, a Brussels-based partner of American international law firm Hunton & Williams gave a public lecture on 'The Implementation of EU and International Data Protection Law' on 22 February 2010.

Christopher Kuner is a partner in the Brussels office of the international law firm Hunton & Williams. Mr. Kuner is also Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Task Force on Privacy and Data Protection and of the European Privacy Officers Forum (EPOF), and sits on the academic advisory board of the German Association for Data Protection and Data Security (GDD). He is author of the book  "European Data Protection Law: Corporate Compliance and Regulation" (Oxford University Press 2007), which has also been published in Chinese, and has published several other books and over 30 articles on various legal topics having to do with data protection and electronic commerce. In the summer of 2009 Mr. Kuner was a Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute of Oxford University.

Mr Andrew Cannon, FCO -  28 October 2008

Mr Andrew Cannon, a Senior Assistant Legal Adviser at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, gave a lecture on 'EU decision-making - An FCO lawyer in Brussels' on 28 October 2008.

Andrew Cannon joined the FCO in 2001 from private practice, and spent three years working primarily on UN and EU issues.  In 2004 he was posted to the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. From 2004-2006, including during the 2005 UK Presidency, he worked on justice and home affairs issues, particularly human rights and civil law, and from 2006-2008 he worked as a legal adviser to the Representation.

Sir Stephen Wall - 21 October 2008

Sir Stephen Wall gave a lecture entitled 'Sans Lisbon: Sans Teeth? Sans Everything?'. The lecture was given in Wills Memorial Building, Old Council Chamber, on 21 October 2008

Sir Stephen was head of the European Secretariat in the Cabinet Office in London and EU adviser to Tony Blair (2000-2004), Permanent Representative to the European Union (1995-2000), Private Secretary to John Major responsible for Foreign Policy and Defence (1991-1993), Private Secretary to three successive Foreign Secretaries (Geoffrey Howe, John Major and Douglas Hurd). Sir Stephen has just published a book on Britain’s relationship with her EU partners, entitled A Stranger in Europe (Oxford University Press, 2008).

Mr Frank Benyon

Frank Benyon is the Principal Legal Advisor at the European Commission and directs the Business Law team of the Commission’s legal service.  He gave a seminar to EU II and postgraduate students on the ECJ judgments in Viking and Laval (on which he pleaded for the Commission before the Court of Justice), He also gave a lecture to EU I students about the enforcement of EU law.

Professor Gareth Davies

Gareth Davies is Professor of European Law at the Free University of Amsterdam.  He gave a seminar to EU II students on the Lisbon Treaty and a staff seminar on the regulation of trade at EU and international level.

Professor Fabian Amtenbrink

Fabian Amtenbrink is Professor of European Union law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.  He gave a staff seminar on legitimacy and institutional balance after the Constitutional Treaty.
