The University of Bristol Law Clinic was originally established by Donald Nicholson in 1995 as a pro bono organisation providing free legal advice to those who, for whatever reason, could not obtain it elsewhere. Following 16 years of successful advice giving, the Law Clinic has more recently been focusing on 'StreetLaw', a new initiative launched in 2011!
StreetLaw involves students in the Law Clinic working together to identify important legal issues concerning different sections of the local community: a presentation is delivered to those concerned with the aim to increase legal literacy and awareness of key issues surrounding the law amongst large numbers in local society.
The Law Clinic is organised and run by students and is well supported by senior members of the Clinic, academic staff and trainee lawyers. The Law Clinic is sponsored by Burges Salmon, a leading regional law firm, who provide valuable funding, training and support.
The Law Clinic demands a strong commitment from its student members from their first day of training through to the completion of all allocated presentations. In return the Law Clinic provides a unique opportunity to gain hugely invaluable presentation skills and allows students to put the legal knowledge they have acquired through their degree to a practical use. Furthermore the Law Clinic promotes the idea of working for the public good and for those who have the privilege of a university education to put something back into the community by increasing awareness of common legal issues.
