Mandarin Chinese

欢迎!  Huan Ying!

Welcome to the Mandarin Chinese page!

Mandarin Chinese is the latest language to be added to the range of applied foreign languages on offer to students at the Language Centre. Currently, Mandarin Chinese is offered to undergraduates (Open Unit), postgraduates (MSc CEAS students) and on the Life-Long Learning programme. Please note: If you are a native Mandarin speaker you are not permitted to study Mandarin at the Language Centre.

Courses for Undergraduates

Since October 2005 Mandarin Chinese has been available to undergraduate students as an Open Unit.. We offer open units at Abinitio, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Post-intermediate levels. Mandarin Chinese for medical students is also available. All our courses use the communicative approach and cover the four core language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are taught to read and write Chinese characters. Social  and cultural elements are also important aspects of the course.

If you are interested in taking Mandarin Chinese as an Open Unit in the academic year 2009-2010, details of AFL registration and the timetable are now available.

The Language Centre no longer accepts non-credit undergraduate students on its applied foreign language units. A language unit must be part of a 120-credit point programme of study and cannot be taken on a voluntary basis. Any student wishing to study a language outside of a 120-credit point programme can take language classes on the Life-long Learning language programme. This includes all postgraduate and PhD students.

Courses for Postgraduates (CEAS)

Intensive Mandarin Chinese courses are offered to MSc in East Asian Studies students at the Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS) in term 1 and term 2. This involves 9 hours classroom teaching and 3 hours self-study.

The UK's understanding of China will be greatly enhanced thanks to a £5 million award to a cross-institutional Centre -- a collaboration between CEAS at Bristol and China specialists at Oxford and Manchester. It will focus on all aspects of China, including Chinese language and culture.

Courses for Lifelong Learning

Evening courses are offered in Mandarin Chinese to members of the public, staff and students at the University of Bristol. These courses are designed to provide the basis for progression to further study at the University, learning for leisure as well as further career development in East Asia. The growth in the number of students in the programme has been significant. The followings are some quotes taken from the feedback given by the students:

"The teaching style is great – well paced and friendly. The evening course has been a great way to spend evenings – must be continued!"

"The course is very well structured and we know what we are going to cover. The tutor’s energy and enthusiasm keeps us going and gives the class a ‘lift’."

"I’ve enjoyed everything. Good mix of teaching methods. I’ve enjoyed the course very much and looking forward to next term!"
