New spam security checking on bristol.ac.uk and my.bristol.ac.uk emails

[15 December 2015]

IT Services are reviewing the existing security controls in place in light of a recent increase in fraudulent emails (often referred to as ‘phishing emails’) received by staff and students.

As part of this review, we will be extending the ‘spam’ checking and filtering service.  As well as checking email coming in from outside the University we will also be checking emails sent from within the University i.e. from and to @bristol.ac.uk and @my.bristol.ac.uk addresses.

This should increase our ability to detect fraudulent emails and mark them as spam.

These actions have been approved by Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Group and the University Planning and Resource Committee.

  • The change will be made on Wednesday 16th December.

Why are we doing this?

Recently many of these messages getting to inboxes have been sent from University of Bristol accounts.  This could be because the sender has had their account compromised (their username and password stolen) or by a process called ‘spoofing’.

Extending our existing scanning to include internal email means that even if the message comes from a University of Bristol account it will still be assessed for spam content.

What does this mean for you?

This does not provide 100% protection from spam and phishing emails.  It is one method to reduce the number received, but you must still remain vigilant against these increasingly sophisticated and effective attacks.

While it is unlikely, there is the possibility that genuine messages may be marked as spam.  We therefore suggest that you check your spam folder regularly.  In particular, check your spam folder if you are expecting an email and have not received it in your inbox.

Where can you go for more information?
