Skype for Business (formerly Lync)

[19 August 2015]

We have recently deployed a critical Microsoft Office update, which was designed to fix a security issue. This also had consequence of changing a product we hope to make further use of in the future, Microsoft Lync, which has now become Skype for Business. Skype for Business is the product we plan to use for instant messaging, video conferencing, web presenting and as a new generation telephone system for the University. Unfortunately, this unplanned change has changed the user interface from Lync to the new Skype one and may cause a splash screen to appear when users log into their PC.

If you have previously used Lync

Your contacts and settings carry across, but you may find the interface has placed things in different places - see further information about the Skype for Business interface.

If you have not previously used Lync

You can simply click dismiss on the splash screen and look out for further information on the capabilities of Skype for Business, at UoB, later in the year.
