Data Centre developments and upcoming work on 6th & 7th October

[01 October 2015]

As part of an ongoing programme of improvements to the University’s data centres, IT Services will be conducting network maintenance within the data centre.

Date and time of maintenance work

  • Tuesday 6th October, 8-9am
  • Wednesday 7th October, 8-9am

We appreciate that early in the autumn term is not an ideal time for such work, however this particular maintenance is urgent to reduce risk and provide new services. Further information about the ongoing improvements and how we conduct such maintenance work is available in the article by Nick Skelton, Assistant Director IT Services (Infrastructure).

Work has been carefully planned and tested to minimise interruptions, however there is always some risk when conducting maintenance. There is a chance of short blips while services are unavailable and longer interruptions to other services. All IT Services delivered from the data centre should be considered at risk, but in particular:

  • MyFiles (O:)
  • Hyper-V cloud (VM servers)
  • Legacy Departmental Filestore (was DFS1)
  • Nimble storage arrays
  • Oracle Database presentation (SITS etc)
  • Oracle Mist
  • VMWare Services (UCard etc)

Maintenance on campus and wireless networks is not taking place on this occasion, so access from departments to the Internet is not affected.

Once the above work is complete additional maintenance on the data centre network is also planned for the last week of October, further information on that will be published shortly.
