£12M investment in new offsite data centre

Architects' plan

[08 December 2015]

In November the University approved the business case to establish an offsite data centre for the University. This is a total investment of† £12million over ten years by the University to underpin IT.

This development will bring extra offsite space to benefit our corporate systems and will also house Phase 4 of the High Performance Computing, BlueCrystal. The plan is to rent capacity from an existing data centre. The rented option gives us a great deal of flexibility to expand and contract the space as our requirements change over time.

There is substantial work required by the network team and others to set up the data centre network and infrastructure for the new site, with the aim that it will be in operation towards the end of 2016.
