Updates: Power outage on 3 July affecting network and services

09:20, 7 July: Travel Insurance application is now available.


12:40, 5 July: It has been confirmed that further work is needed to fix some damage to the memory on servers caused by the power outage. This has been scheduled with the contractors for Wednesday 8 July between 1-3pm. This work will mean an interruption to the servers during that time and will cause a number of services to be unavailable. A list of services affected can be found on the news item.

16:45, 4 July: The Travel Insurance application software is currently unavailable..

11:40, 4 July: The Library catalogue (Aleph system) is now available.

Please note that additional work will be needed in the near future to resolve the damage caused which will result in services being unavailable. This will be communicated to users.

10:20, 4 July: Aleph Library catalogue is currently unavailable. This is due to damage to the server memory caused by the power outage. Work is taking place to recover the service.

Please note that due to the damage caused by the outage we need to call in suppliers to conduct maintenance work. This will mean that further disruption to service is highly likely in the near future.



08:00, 4 July:  Work has taken place overnight to deal with outstanding issues following the outage on 3 July.

The Library catalogue and MyFiles for Postgraduate Research Students is now available.

If staff or students do identify any outstanding issues please contact the IT Service Desk.



At 12 noon on Thursday 3 July there was a power outage that affected network facilities and the data centre in the Computer Centre.

This outage had the effect of removing network access across the University and making the majority of online services unavailable, including the University website.

Power came back very quickly but both the network and services needed to be restarted. The network was restored at around 12:45 . Individual services were restored as soon as possible thereafter. The majority of services were back by around 14:00.

Most services are now back although we are identifying a number of issues that need to be fixed. Current issues include:

  • Library catalogue unavailable
  • Around 100 postgraduate students do not have access to their MyFiles
