We are aware that there are a number of email phishing scams in circulation which have been sent to staff and students. The emails refers to mailbox quota / email accounts and asks individuals to visit a web address to login to access increased quota or to unlock an account etc. Most recently emails have been sent to staff taking them to a web page which is an exact copy of our UoB webmail login page.
Any correspondence to staff and students regarding University email will be sent from @bristol.ac.uk mail address and you will be directed to web pages on the University website - bristol.ac.uk or bris.ac.uk. Please check the sender email and web url carefully. Remember that in an email it is very easy to impersonate a sender; you cannot trust the address in the 'From' field.
If you receive any email communication which you suspect may be a phishing scam, or if you have responded and provided your username and password, then please contact the IT Service Desk for advice. We would much rather you check than take the risk of revealing your University username and password.
Additional information can be found on protecting yourself from phishing on the IT news item (2 July 2012) and on the Information Security website.
