[16 October 2012]

In the past few weeks we have seen increasing reports of staff having difficulties logging into and maintaining a connection to the email service (news item 9 October) . Efforts so far to reduce the load on the service have given only marginal improvement and so to allow a significant increase in performance, we plan to move the staff email service to new, more powerful hardware.

Preparatory work for this has begun and we plan to move to the new server on the evening of Monday 22 October. This will mean that the staff email service will be unavailable between 6 - 8pm on Monday 22 October. This will mean that users of this service will be unable to receive or send emails during this period.

All incoming email will be stored and delivered when the service starts again. Staff will not need to change any settings and their email will reconnect as normal once the work is complete.

The majority of staff and research postgraduates receive their email on the affected server. We will email people with accounts on this server directly with details of this work. Staff who receive their email on Google will not be affected, neither will staff and research postgraduates who receive their email on departmental servers (parts of Computer Science, Geography, ILRT, Physics and Social Medicine). Undergraduate and taught postgraduate students will also not be affected.

IT Services apologises for the inconvenience this will cause. If you have any concerns or questions about this work please contact the IT Service Desk.
