Click on the subject of a particular mail and that message is displayed.
Email and web addresses are live links so you can click on them and send an email or open a page.
Mail threads are colour-coded: the SquirrelMail default is to prefix every line of a message that has been replied to with ‘>‘. SquirrelMail sees the '>' and colour-codes the text with these prefixes in a different colour to the reply. This works two replies deep.
Another menu bar is located below the main menu choices. This bar is in three sections. On the left side you can delete the current message or return to the message list. In the middle you can navigate between messages. On the right, various mailing functions are presented.

Click this link to return to the folder from which you opened the message.

Click this link to delete the message being currently viewed, which means that the message will either be deleted immediately, or, if configured, moved to your designated trash folder. If moved to your trash folder, you will be able to recover the message later, otherwise, the deletion is permanent.
All attachments of deleted mail are deleted as well. You can prevent the loss of attachments by downloading (saving) them first (as explained later on this page).
Please note: the trash folder is not emptied automatically, but there is a ‘purge’ button to allow you to empty your trash whenever you want. The purge link is not visible until the trash folder is populated.

In the middle of the bar are navigation buttons. ‘Previous’ will only be an active link if there is a message before the one you are viewing in the list. Clicking this link will display the previous message without the need to go back to the summary display of messages. The same goes for the ‘Next’ link which will advance you to the mail immediately following the one currently being viewed.
On the right, the ‘Forward’ link, when pressed, opens the ‘Compose’ page with the previously viewed email in the text box below a tag of '--Original Message--'.
‘Fwd:’ is automatically added to the beginning of the original subject line. The various fields for sending to an address await your completion. You may position the cursor in the text box to add comments to the already existing text. You may also use the attachment feature.
Click this link to return a new message to the originator of the previously viewed message. ‘Re:’ is automatically added to the beginning of the original subject line.
Again, the text of the original message is quoted in the text box. This time the ‘>‘ symbol is placed in front of the original text. You may note that some of the original text doesn't have the ‘>‘ symbol. This is due to line wrapping and may be unavoidable.
Please note: if this happens, try setting the value of 'Wrap incoming text' in the Options page to a larger number. This may help.
Comments can be made anywhere in the text box in addition to the quoted message. You may also use the attachment feature.
This does the same as ‘Reply’, but all addresses listed in the header will receive the mail, rather than just the person who sent you the mail.
This will display all header fields for the email message. This includes the route that the message took to get to you, and a lot more detailed information about the message itself, such as it’s spam score.
If you want to print a message, click this link which presents you with a new window containing the message in print-ready format with all unnecessary information and menus removed.
Clicking the ‘Print’ button in this window will send the message to your printer.
Press ‘Close’ to return to your message.
This will display all header fields, the message text and any additional information, such as message structure and attachment information.

Just above the bottom bar you will find this link. Clicking this link allows you to save this email to a filestore, local or network, as a plain text file.

Any attachments sent with a received email will be displayed at the bottom of the message inside a coloured box. The file is presented as a link with a description of the file type.
Clicking on the file name will either display the attachment or present a download dialogue depending on the file type.

If you wish to download the file (rather than just viewing it), click on the ‘Download’ link on the right-hand side.
