1.1 Logging into SquirrelMail

1.1.1 How to login to SquirrelMail

Go to the SquirrelMail login page.

Select the server you receive your mail on from the dropdown 'Mailstore' list and login using your UOB username and password.

If you receive an error message on login, the most likely reasons are:

  • You have accidentally mistyped either username or password. Both are case-sensitive, so you need to ensure that you have entered lower and upper case characters correctly, as well as any special characters (such as exclamation marks) that your password contains;

  • You have selected an incorrect mailstore server (the initial default value may not be the one relevant to you). Select the correct server from the dropdown list. Once you have selected the correct mailstore server, click on the Remember Mailstore checkbox so that SquirrelMail remembers this setting on subsequent logins (see the 'Remember my Name option' section below for some important information on this option).

1.1.2 'Remember my Name' option

What does 'Remember my Name mean?

When you sign in with your name, your browser can 'remember' this information. If you check the box it means that you will not have to enter this information on subsequent logins. However, if you do not log in for 7 days, this information is 'forgotten' and you may have to reselect the correct mailstore server again.

Please note: Your mailstore is only remembered on the PC you are currently using, so you will need to check that the correct mailstore is selected if logging in from a different PC.

Should I be concerned about security?

If you are concerned that other people might attempt to access your email account, then do not check the 'Remember my Name' box. You may want to click 'Sign Out' when you leave your computer, which ensures that you will be asked for your login information the next time anyone accesses this webmail from your computer.

If you use a shared computer (in a library, Internet cafe, university, airport or other common area) DO NOT check the 'Remember my Name' checkbox.

Is saving just my name really a security risk?

By providing one-half of the key needed to access your account, you are making it slightly easier for someone to attempt to gain access. In most situations this option is safe; however you should think about who else may have access to your computer, and be aware of the slightly increased risk.

What if I change my mind?

When you login, just uncheck the 'Remember my Name' checkbox. You can always sign out at any time by clicking the 'Sign Out' link at the top of each page. This erases the stored login information. Once you have signed out, you can sign in again and choose whether or not your browser should 'remember' your login information.

How does this work?

This is done with something called persistent cookies. Cookies are pieces of information generated by a Web server and stored in the user's computer by the browser. By enabling 'Remember my Name', you are instructing the server to store your information in an encrypted fashion on your computer. Each time you login to this mail server, your name is requested from your browser by the server. Clicking the 'Sign Out' link will erase these cookies.
