Getting started with webmail

SquirrelMail provides a way of checking your email through a web browser, which means you can log into your mailbox from anywhere with Internet access.

SquirrelMail is laid out in two main sections called frames. The left frame lists the currently subscribed folders. More information about the left frame can be found under the 'Folders’ section of this help documentation.

At the top of the right-hand frame, the 'Current Folder' bar displays which of your folders is currently open. When you login, your Inbox is opened by default. To open a different folder, click on the required folder in the 'Folders' frame to the left of the screen.

At the top-left of the screen is a series of menu choices, which is visible at all times whilst you are logged in:

  • INBOX - takes you directly to your Inbox folder to view messages;
  • Compose - lets you write and send emails (which can include attachments);
  • Addresses - holds a list of addresses that are contained in your personal address book and the University Directory;
  • Folders - lets you delete, create, rename, subscribe, and unsubscribe folders;
  • Options - lets you change settings relating to how SquirrelMail responds and looks.

At the top-right of the screen, underneath the Information Services logo, is a smaller menu bar:

  • Help - gives further details about the above features;
  • Search - lets you search through a mailbox for given criteria;
  • Sign Out - logs you out of the program when you are finished.

Please note: it is good practice, from a security point of view, to logout using the 'Sign Out' option instead of closing the browser or navigating to a new URL without logging out.
