Quickstart guide

This 'quickstart' page describes how to obtain, install and start using Calendar. Please read the instructions carefully and consult your local IT Support Staff if you require any assistance.

Obtaining a username and password

Before you can use the calendar software you will need to enter a server, username and password. You have already been registered with the calendar server using your UOB common username and in your email notifying you of your registration you will have been notified of an initial password. The first time you log in, you should change this password as described in Changing your password (below).

Using the Web client

Using the Web client is the simplest way to use Calendar. It is particularly suitable if you do not have administration rights for installing software on your UOB computer or if you are working offsite with Internet access.

To use the Web client:

  • Start (or switch to) your usual Web browser
  • Open the Web client to Oracle Calendar, available at http://calendar.bris.ac.uk
  • You will be redirected to a page labelled 'Single sign on for Web Applications'.
  • Enter your username and your UOB password (the one that you use for mail).
  • You will then be forwarded to your calendar pages.

The first time you use the client, the default Daily view of your calendar with any entries for the current date is displayed.

See the Using Calendar web version section for illustrated tutorials for using this client.

Desktop clients

Some features, such as regularly repeating meetings, work best by using the calendar software client which can be installed on your computer (Windows, Linux, Mac or Solaris) providing you have sufficient access privileges on your computer. Clients are also available for some handheld devices.

See the Installing Calendar page for further information.

Windows desktop clients

Please note: Windows NT, 2000 and XP require you to have administration rights on your computer in order to install the desktop client.

  • If you are using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, make sure that you are logged in with administration rights. If you do not, or are unsure, please consult your local IT Support Staff
  • Download the software, making a note of where you save it to on your computer
  • Close all other applications
  • Run the file you downloaded and follow the onscreen instructions

Once you have installed the client, set up a new connection from it to the Calendar server as described below.

Windows Palm sync client

If you have any Palm-compatible device running Palm desktop 3.1 to 4.1, you can install a client to enable you to synchronise the information held on your Palm with that on the central server (and vice versa).

If you have a previous version of Oracle Calendar Sync (CorporateSync) installed, Oracle Corporation recommends that you perform a synchronisation before you install Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm for Windows.

Windows PocketPC sync client

If you have a Pocket PC (Windows CE 3.0) with MIPS, SH3, ARM or XScale processor, you can install a client to enable you to synchronise the information held on your Pocket PC with that on the central server (and vice versa). If you are unsure of the specification of your Pocket PC, consult your supplier.

Connector for Outlook

An Oracle Connector for Outlook is also available in order to synchronise information between Oracle Calendar and Outlook.

Please note: you must read the preinstallation requirements carefully before installing the connector.

Linux client

Macintosh client

The Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm for Macintosh is also available.

Setting up a new Oracle Calendar desktop connection

The first time that you use Calendar you will need to set up the connection information:

Starting Oracle Calendar

If you are using the Windows desktop client:

  • From the Start button, select 'Programs' / 'Oracle Calendar' / 'Oracle Calendar'

Setting up the connection

Note: The version number may vary from that shown below.

  • At the Sign-in window, click on Other
  • At the Connection Manager (image below) click on New
    • Enter a name for the new connection (we suggest calendar)
    • Enter calendar.bris.ac.uk as the server
    • Press lookup and you will get a pop-up box labelled 'Configuration Manager'
    • Accept the default ('Configure at login from user name') and press the Configure button.
    • You will be returned to the Connection Editor. Click on OK to accept these settings
    • At the Connection Manager, select your Calendar connection and click on Make Default
    • Click on OK to return to the Sign-in window

You should now be able to log into your Calendar account:

  • Select the new connection, calendar
  • Enter your username and password
  • Click on Sign-In

If you have not used Calendar before you will be asked if you wish to Work Offline. Select No

The software is simple and intuitive to use and on-screen help is available from all of the clients but other documentation is available below.

Changing your password

The first time you use Oracle Calendar, you must change the password you were originally assigned:

  • From the 'Tools' link in the Web client or the 'Tools' menu in your native client, use the dropdown menu and select 'Change Password'

Passwords and data are encrypted between all clients and the calendar server; the Web client is running via a secure server - you are therefore safe to use the same password that you use for other services, for example, email. Currently calendar passwords are stored in the calendar service itself; the intention is that in due course the same method used for authenticating your email password will be implemented.
