Internet Explorer 7 - Proxy configuration instructions

Follow these instructions whilst running Internet Explorer 7 to configure the browser to use the local proxy server.

Please refer to the main proxy configuration page for details of how to configure other web browsers.

  1. From the Tools drop down menu select Internet Options...
  2. In the Internet Options panel select the Connections tab.

The Internet Options panel should now look similar to this:
    IE 7 settings window

    • Ethernet networks, including ResNet: select the LAN Settings button.
    • Broadband users: depending on your configuration, you may need to configure this under either Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings or LAN Settings. If there is a section under Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings with the name of your Internet Provider you should perform the configuration there. Otherwise, use LAN Settings. If you have a broadband connection at home shared between multiple computers (i.e. you have a router), you will almost certainly need to use LAN Settings.
    • Dialup connections: click the name of the appropriate connection in the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings box so that it is highlighted (as UoB Staff VPN is in the example), and then select the Settings button immediately to the right of that box.
    • In the resulting Settings panel, the title of which varies depending on how you got there, place a tick in the Use automatic configuration script tick box, and in the text box enter:
      http://wwwcache.bris.ac.uk/autoconfig

The Settings panel should now look something like this (if you are configuring a dialup connection there will be some additional information which you can ignore):
      IE 7 autoconfig settings

    • Select OK
    • In the Internet Options panel select OK
