New Off-site Proxy

On 8th March 2007, the Authenticated Proxy Service was updated with a simpler authentication system. To reflect the new simpler process, the name of the service was changed to the 'Off-site Proxy'.

The main change to the system was that we removed the 'daily password' system. This was the part of the service that most people have found confusing and/ or difficult to use in the past. The new service simply requires that you enter your usual UOB username and password when prompted.

The security of the system is even stronger than that of the Authenticated Proxy Service, which is why it's now possible to use the UOB password directly.

You will be able to identify when you are using the new service, as its name will appear in the username/ password box:

It is possible to try out the new system in advance of the changeover provided that your web browser is already configured to use the existing Authenticated Proxy Service. You will not need to change your browser's configuration. Simply visit the test off-site proxy web page, change the setting to 'Use the new off-site proxy service' option, and click on 'Change Settings'. Then restart your browser. You can change back using the same method. Note that this relies on your browser being set up to use the current service in exactly the way specified by our configuration instructions.

If you do try out the new service in advance, please report your experiences to cache-manager@bristol.ac.uk.
