Before you call the Help Desk

Before you contact the Help Desk

If your ResNet connection isn't working, before phoning the help desk there are some simple checks you can carry out which might fix the problem.

  1. Try shutting down and restarting your computer. This will solve many temporary problems.
  2. Check that your ethernet cable is correctly inserted into the wall socket and your computer. It may be loose; try unplugging the cable and pushing it back in again. It should click in and stay in place so it won't come loose if you tug it gently. Borrow a cable from a friend and try that. If the other cable works your original was faulty and the help desk will give you a replacement.
  3. Log on to My ResNet to check the status of your connection (eg has your subscription expired?)
  4. Check the ResNet blog and status report for any information about planned interruptions in service or network faults that might be causing your problem.
  5. If your connection doesn't work use the troubleshooting tips in your ResNet pack to try and diagnose what the problem is.
