Note: the summer vacation 2009 is almost over - this page is left for reference purposes only. Arrangements for summer vacation 2010 will be announced next year.
We are able to provide the ResNet service during the summer vacation, from Tuesday 23rd June until 5th October 2009.
Unless you have already paid for the summer vacation, you will need to extend your subscription if you wish to carry on using ResNet. The subscription fee for the summer is £22.
First go to My ResNet to check when your connection expires, then pay online to renew your connection
If for any reason you can't pay online you can visit the Computer Centre Help Desk to pay, or post the vacation application form to us, with a cheque.
If you are not a member of the University of Bristol you can still subscribe to ResNet providing you have some educational status. This includes students or staff from other universities and pre-sessional students who will be starting degrees at Bristol in the autumn.
We cannot offer ResNet to holiday-makers or other people living in University accommodation but with no educational status. The University of Bristol receives Internet access from JANET, the national academic network. JANET has strict policies on connecting visitors to which we must comply.
Visitors to the University must complete the vacation application form. Unless they have already received a temporary visitor username and password they must also:
Please visit the Help Desk at the Computer Centre, Tyndall Avenue (8am-5.30pm Mon-Fri) to complete the visitor forms, show your educational ID and pay for your ResNet connection. If you are unable to visit the Computer Centre during these times then there is a special procedure which unfortunately can take 5 or more working days, hence we strongly recommend visiting us. Please email resnet-help@bristol.ac.uk for more details.
Visitors receive full Internet access (they can use web, email, Skype, instant messaging, etc) but are placed in a separate network segment which does not have access to resources only intended for Bristol staff and students (such as electronic library resources and site licensed software). This network is also rate limited to 1Mbps download and 0.5Mbps upload, however there is no usage limit as long as you keep your usage to sensible levels as stated in the regulations.
If you are a pre-sessional student studying with the University of Bristol Language Centre special arrangements apply. We'll come to the language centre to help you register and pay for ResNet. There is no need to visit the Help Desk.
Students at external language schools not connected to the University must apply for ResNet at the Help Desk and show their educational ID as per the arrangements for other educational visitors.
If you don't have any form of educational status then unfortunately we can't connect you to ResNet. Alternative Internet access is available as Mobile Broadband, from mobile phone providers including Three, T-Mobile, Orange, Vodafone, O2 and Virgin. If you only want a connection for a short period, look for Pay As You Go or 1-month only contracts. Expect to pay about £15/month plus £30 for the modem. Speeds will vary according to several factors, including the mobile signal strength in your room.
Users connecting to ResNet must make sure their computers are secure and up-to-date. Any systems which are insecure or infected by a virus will be disconnected from the network.
Every summer vacation we schedule work to upgrade the ResNet service. This is essential work to improve the capacity and resilience of the network before the next academic year. This maintenance work will involve some interruptions to the service. Short interruptions may occur without notice, longer breaks will be notified in advance on the ResNet blog.
If you need to move rooms during the vacation you can take your ResNet connection with you (provided you are moving to another residence with the service). Simply call the Help Desk or transfer the connection yourself using My ResNet.
ResNet will only work with one computer at a time. Your ResNet account is tied to the computer you used to register. If you want to transfer your ResNet connection to a different computer then contact the help desk or use My ResNet to notify us of your new computer.
