Security requirements for computers to connect to ResNet

In order to connect to ResNet we require that your computer meets a certain minimum security standard. This is essential to protect your computer on the Internet - and to protect everyone else too, as an at risk computer can spread viruses to other people on the University network.

If you have a fast connection at home, check your computer is up to date before you get to Bristol by going to WindowsUpdate <http://update.microsoft.com>.

Windows

  • Install all available security updates from WindowsUpdate <http://update.microsoft.com>
  • Enable Automatic Updates
  • Use the built-in Windows Firewall
  • Install an antivirus package, such as the free Microsoft Security Essentials package from Microsoft

To check that automatic updates and the firewall are turned on go to Start, Control Panel, Security or Security Center.

Apple Macs

  • Install all available security updates from Apple - Click the Apple menu, and choose Software Update.

We recommend that you install an antivirus package on your Mac, such as the one available from Sophos as contrary to popular belief they can get viruses!

iPads, Smartphones and other devices

Where possible we strongly recommend you keep all your devices up to date with security patches, and change any default passwords
