Job vacancies with ResNet from September 2011

Why work for ResNet?

Each year a large number of students join the team to run ResNet. A job with ResNet offers competitive pay and excellent experience while working with, and helping other, Bristol students. It can be hard work but it is enjoyable, a chance to develop your technical and professional skills, and great experience for future employers.

Jobs start in September, most work takes place around the start of the autumn term, but there will be opportunity for a few hours per week during term time for the rest of the 2011/12 academic year. This year we are advertising one post: ResNet technical support and have 4 vacancies for this position (in addition to members of the ResNet team who are returning from previous years).

The closing date for applications is 10am, Monday June 13th 2011. 

Interviews to take place on either Wednesday 15th, Thursday 16th or Friday 17th June, depending on your availability.

Technical support (approx 4 vacancies)

Description:

ResNet technical support staff provide support by phone and in person at laptop clinics. Staff must have excellent communication skills and customer service skills as well as technical experience and problem solving skills.

The busiest period (most work available) is immediately before and after the start of the autumn term, specifically:

Week (-1) commencing Mon 26th September Week before Freshers' Week, many international students arrive
Week 0:  commencing Mon 3rd October Freshers' Week,  most UK students arrive
Week 1: commencing Mon 10th October    First Week of teaching

If applying you must be available for some work during each of those three weeks. There will also be work available during term-time for the rest of the year on Student Laptop Clinics. Shifts can be fitted around your academic timetable. Staff are paid at an hourly rate on the basis of timesheets completed once a month.

As ResNet technical support staff you will need as many as possible of the following skills:

Required:

  • Excellent experience using and troubleshooting Windows XP, Vista and 7 - eg configuring network connections, removing malware, diagnosing faults with systems which will not connect and laptops which will not start up.
  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, and wireless networking
  • Prior experience in computer support, formal or informal

Desirable:

  • Experience using and troubleshooting Apple Mac OS X
  • Experience with Linux
