What is Confluence?

Confluence is an enterprise-level wiki application, which offers a user-friendly interface making it easy to develop and maintain your wikis (e.g. access control, email notification, customisation etc).   The product demonstration and videos are useful introductions.

Why is IS implementing a new wiki service?

The pilot wiki has been in service since September 2006.  In response to its success and the ongoing requirement from the University for online collaboration tool, IS decided to upgrade the service to a full production service.

A survey in November 2007 revealed that although the pilot wiki service had been a beneficial added service, its user interface wasn't considered very intuitive and there was a demand for more enriched features.

In response, IS decided to purchase and implement Confluence.

Please note that, while Information Services will support the technical implementation of the service, it currently has no plans to support University departments in using this new service. As part of its implementation, Information Services aim to provide sufficient information to ensure UoB departments can set up and self-support their own wiki.

Activities:

• migrate all JSP wiki spaces onto Confluence - November - COMPLETED
• establish the operational service - December - COMPLETED

Timescale: the new service is now available to all University users.
